Ontario CA – Thompson Boxing returned with “Path To Glory” headlined by Isaac “Dinamita” Zarate coming off the huge win versus Carlos Carlson to take on veteran Christian Esquivel in the main event. It was a showcase fight for Zarate after a great win and it started good for the San Pedro California fighter but it ended quick due to accidental headbutt. Zarate was firing in the first round rocking Esquivel who dropped down in weight after his TKO loss to Manny Robles Jr earlier this year. In the 2nd round both fighters clashed heads and Esquivel had a nasty cut prompting the ringside doctor to stop the fight at 2:18 mark of the 2nd round. The fight was declared a technical draw because the fight had not gone 4 full rounds and could not go to the scorecards. It was semi climatic ending and unfortunate but it is part of the boxing game sometimes. It was a tough break for Zarate who was looking to build off the Carlson win and stablemate/sparring partner Danny Roman capturing the WBA title.
In the co main event and fight of the night Mohammed Rodriguez versus Cesar Villarraga went to war. It was back and forth action with both fighters landing bombs bringing the crowd to its feet after the fight ended. Mohammed was dropped in the 8th round and survived after it seemed he was done. In the end it was a close split decision win for Mohammed. It was really a good fight between two evenly matched fighters who have flaws but put it all on the line. These are the type of fights that have made Thompson Boxing the example for smaller promotional companies. I would love to see a rematch between Rodriguez and Villarraga but no matter if it happens Rodriguez is lucky to escape with the win. Both fighters can and should build off this fight.
The knock out of the night goes to young undefeated Saul Sanchez who trains with Coach Joel Diaz and looked sensational stopping Nestor Ramos with a vicious body shot. The shot was so hard it could be heard and the crack to Nestor Ramos ribs sent him to the floor in immediate pain. Saul Sanchez who is the younger of brother Emilio Sanchez shined and did what he was suppose too against overmatched Ramos, Sanchez improves to 6-0 5KOs. Daniel Guzman from LA improved to 2-1 when he got a body shot KO of his own over Jose Mora in the 2nd fight of the night. Danny Guzman won his 2nd fight in a row following a DQ to Xavier Pena in his pro debut. In the opening bout Brandon Trejo from Napa California got the 1st round KO over Carlos Apodaca to improve to 3-0 1KO.
