Saturday August 5th, 2017-Los Angeles, CA~ Top Rank Promotions brought a boxing card to the renowned Microsoft Theater, which featured Ukranian Star and one of the best pound for pound fighters in the world Vasyl Lomachenko 9-1 (7 KO’s) . His opponent, former NABO Featherweight Title holder Miguel “Scorpion” Marriaga 25-3 (21 KO’s) out of Cartagena, Colombia.
The fight showcased what has been evident from the very moment of the conception of Lomachenko’s professional career, the world class talent and fighting skill that characterizes his persona. From the get go, Lomachenko made a statement about his approach for this fight, a quick and steady pace, charging Marriaga by setting up a strong jab and letting his hands go early on. That very jab served as a precedent for the strong left hook that began landing flush on Marriaga’s head. As Lomachenko mounted his attacks, he clearly was using his advantage in strength and speed, volume became the order of business for the Ukrainian star, as he began overwhelming Marriaga with strong combinations and cutting off the ring on him as he tried to retreat and counter with his own shots.
Marriaga stood strong and poised but to no avail, as Lomachenko entered with crisp combinations Marriaga’s attempts to counter were only serving as his own demise. The third round served as the first reality check for Marriaga, as Lomachenko let off a jab and followed with a straight left shot that dropped Marriaga to the canvas. Entering the 4th round Marriaga clearly had a strategy, but Lomachenko’s Prowess and ring “Generalship” commanded the respect of his opponent and the admiration of the crowd. As Marriaga struggled to find the distance to set up his attacks, Lomachenko overwhelmed him with inside presence and a perfectly excuted plan of attack. Landing effective combinations was the mission for Loma, and the process yielded the result. An exchange at the end of the 7th round in which Lomachenko landed a thundering left hook and dropped Marriaga for the second time seemed to serve as the curtain call. As a visibly defeated Marriaga approached his corner, he never answered the bell for the 8th round, as his corner had seen enough punishment. Referee Jack Reiss waved the fight off and handed Vasyl Lomachenko the win via Technical Decision.
In the co main event of the evening, perennial and rugged NABO Lightweight title holder Ray Beltran 34-7-1 (21 KO’s) successfully defended his strap by defeating the tough Bryan Vasquez 35-3 (19 KO’s). The fight was a closely contested match, as both fighters seemed to stray from any real defensive technique and engage in heavy exchanges in usual fashion for both. The fans were certainly pleased, as heavy volume of punches was the order of business. Beltran did not disappoint in the offensive field as usual, throwing heavy shots but leaving much to be desired in the defensive category by lunging in with his head on several occasions. That very approach also enabled Vasquez to land heavy shots of his own. The fan friendly match went the distance with both warriors putting it all on the line, and at the end of 10 hard fought rounds, Beltran escaped with a close majority decision with scores of 95-95 and 96-94 X2.
In earlier night action Arnold Barbosa Jr. defeated Jonathan Chicas via Unanimous Decision with scores of 78-72, 77-73 and 76-74 to remain undefeated at 17-0 (6 KO’s). Maxim Dadashev defeated Jose Marrufo via KO in the 8th round to improve to 8-0 (7 KO’s).
KEEP IT TRU!
