Thomspon Boxing celebrated it’s 17th anniversary in grand fashion and despite the original main event falling through the show went on to deliver another night of great action fights. The latest edition of “New Blood” featured Erick Ituarte moving down in weight to take on Isaac Zarate who was moving up. What we got a was a highly contested match up that showcased what Thompson Boxing is all about. Great fights and even match ups. Except this time around the world got the chance to watch live as the fights were streamed on ThompsonBoxing.com as well as Thompsons Facebook page.
Zarate whose nickname is “Dinamita” which translates to Dynamite showed that TNT as he dropped Iturate in the 3rd who up to that point was building an early lead. The sneaky left that dropped Ituarte landed right on the button and gave Zarate life, a fight broke out that point. It was back & forth action as Ituarte continued to stalk Zarate. Both fighters focused on the body attack but Zarate began to slow a bit as he was looking to counter. Team Ituarte the bigger fighter made the adjustments and began to score by landing the harder shots. Ituarte despite being dropped finished strong and kept pressing the action to get the win on our scorecard.
The fight went the distance and ended in a split decision for Erick Ituarte who caputured the vacant NABF Junior Featherweight Title with the win. Final scorecards read 76-75 for Zarate, but over ruled by 77-74, and 76-75 for Erick Iturate who has now won 10 fights in row since his lone defeat in 2014. The Santa Ana native who trains along side Ronny Rios at TKO boxing club improved to 17-1-1 2KOs. Isaac Zarate drops his 2nd fight in a row to fall to 12-3-2 but at the age of 25 has plenty left in the tank but may want to drop back down to 122 lbs if he can make the weight.
In the co main event and a battle of Tijuana, Baja California fighters seen Christain Ayala get the SD win over Ricardo “Hindu” Espinoza. El Coralillo was busy and did enough to get the win over his crosstown native Espinoza. With the win Ayala improves to 10-1 4KOs while Espinoza drops to 10-2 8KOs.
In other action: Top prospect Ruben Villa improved to 6-0 when he scored his 4th KO over outmatched Anthony de Jesus Ruiz Sanchez. Villa who is known as “RV4” is co promoted by Thompson and Banner Promotions looked sensational en route to the TKO victory. Sanchez corner stopped the fight at the end of the 5th round in a fight that went on a little longer then it needed too. The official time of the stoppage was 2:43 of the 5th round. We have said it before but will say it again, Ruben Villa is a fighter to watch and is the real deal. Mario Hernandez improved to 2-0 with the UD win over May Garduno who drops his pro debut. Juan Garcia Mendez & Cesar Villarraga ended in a split draw in a toe to toe battle. In the opening bout Brandon Trejo got the UD win in his professional debut over Pablo Cupul.
Since TRU Boxing Headz early days we have made it point to support Thompson Boxing as best we can for what they do for the sport of boxing and the fighters. They are a strong hold in our sport and deserve the respect of the masses. Mr Ken Thompson and the team have a great thing going. The 17th anniversary was a celebration to the longevity in the sport and we look forward to working with Thompson for many more years to come. The next show is scheduled for June 23rd.
