Indio CA – Ismael “El Tigre” Barroso, former Interim WBA Champion knocked out Fidel Maldonado Jr in the 6th round in a great showing. The former interim champ was coming off a defeat at the hands of Kevin Mitchell in a fight for the WBA title, but was knocked out and had not fought since. Coming off the year and half layoff, Barroso looked really good, scoring a body shot knockout that had Maldonado gasping for air on his knees. When Maldonado could not beat the count, he laid flat on his back, suffering a great deal of pain by the perfectly left landed body shot. Fidel Maldonado who is always  the warrior and has won some big fights, was no match for Barroso tonight, as El Tigre looked like a world beater tonight. Maldonado was dropped in the 3rd round by a couple of left hands and deducted a point for continued holding, he was up against it all night long. It all ended with a left hook to the body as Ismael Barroso improved to 20-1 and notching his 19th knockout. Barroso’s left hand was the star of the night and he showed that the power is real.

In the co main event, Marcelino “Nino” Lopez got the 2nd round knockout against another WBA Interim Champion in Pablo Cano. The outcome was not the shocker, but the fact that it happened so early was unexpected.  Both the main and co main events had the ingredients for great wars as each and were set up for a possible rematch between Maldonado and Cano. Both fighters fought in Frisco at The Star home of the Dallas Cowboys in June in a close fight, but that did not happen. All they had to do was win each of their respective bouts, but both Maldonado and Cano got knocked out in clear fashion.

In other action, Ruben Rodriguez got the unanimous decision win and improved to 2-0 1 knockout when he out hustled Israel Villela. All 3 scored cards read 40-36 for Rodriguez, a local from Indio, CA. In the swing bout, Oscar Duarte remained undefeated as he scored the TKO win over Juan Montes in a bloody fight. Marvin Cabrera got the TKO win over Hector Velazquez to remain undefeated and in the first fight of the night Javier Martinez got the UD win over Ricardo Arias.
